Reforestation initiatives in Burkina Faso and Burundi
Overview
Reforestation and tree-planting initiatives have been implemented across Burkina Faso and Burundi to address environmental and administrative needs.
In Burkina Faso, efforts have focused on both conservation and urban beautification. In the Sourou province, local authorities and traditional practitioners collaborated to plant 165 plants in a medicinal grove to protect at-risk species. In Ouahigouya, the Bayir Neeré association planted 490 trees along the RN2 highway as part of a national campaign. Additionally, in Tangaye, community members used eucalyptus trees to spatially delimit public service areas, such as the prefecture and education district sites.
In Burundi, the ‘Ewe Burundi Urambaye’ national program facilitated reforestation on the Cene mountain range in Gitega province. Local residents reported that these efforts have significantly reduced soil erosion and landslides during heavy rains. To ensure the sustainability of these forests, authorities are working to protect the area from bushfires, while residents have committed to only collecting fallen dry branches.
