Tree-planting initiatives launch on World Environment Day in Spain and Uruguay

On 5 June, World Environment Day, Spanish biologist and environmental educator Raúl de Tapia Alcanduerca, founder and president of Fundación Tormes, presented his new book *Un árbol de compañía*, co‑written with writer Clara Obligado. The book reflects on human‑tree connections and draws on his work at the Aldehuela de Tormes forest sanctuary near Salamanca.

In Ecilda Paullier, Uruguay, local resident Raúl Pérez inaugurated a public fruit‑tree planting project on the same day. The first trees were planted near Plaza Artigas, beside the bus terminal, with participation from school children, teachers, the mayor Ignacio Mesa and other municipal officials. The initiative aims to expand fruit‑bearing trees throughout public spaces to promote sustainability, education and community engagement.
