Tren Maya car derails near San Francisco station in Campeche
A derailment involving the last car of Tren Maya 303 occurred near the San Francisco station in Campeche. The incident happened at approximately 15:30 hours as the train was traveling the Cancún-Palenque route. While 123 passengers were on board, no injuries were reported. Passengers were provided with food and water before being transferred by bus to the Edzná station to continue their journey via another convoy.
Official statements characterized the event as a “track mishap” and did not immediately specify a technical cause. A Railway Accident Investigating Commission has been tasked with determining the reason for the anomaly. President Claudia Sheinbaum previously addressed railway issues by stating the system receives maintenance and attributing past faults to “human error.”
Critics of the project have raised concerns regarding its technical and environmental foundations. Reports indicate that the project's cost rose from an initial 140,000 million pesos to 500,000 million pesos. Additionally, passenger numbers have reportedly fallen short of initial projections, with foreign tourists accounting for only 8.5% of the 2.5 million passengers transported between December 2023 and June 2026.
