Overview

The Tren Maya railway project in Mexico continues to face severe financial instability, reduced logistical expectations, and operational safety concerns.

Advertising costs have also risen significantly; in 2024, SEDENA allocated 491 million pesos to promoting the Tren Maya, while the project generated only 297 million pesos in revenue that year.

Logistical and tourism projections have been scaled back. Cargo mobilization projections for 2030 have been reduced to 4 million tons annually, a 15% decrease from the previous estimate of 4.7 million tons. Cargo services are expected to begin between late 2026 and 2027, supported by planned infrastructure such as the rehabilitation of Line FA and the Poxilá–Progreso railway bypass. Additionally, the project has struggled to attract international travelers; between September 2025 and June 2026, international passengers represented only 8.5 percent of total ridership.

Operational risks materialized on August 31, 2026, when a passenger train on the Cancun-Palenque route partially derailed near the San Francisco de Campeche station. While no injuries were reported among the 123 passengers, the Railway Accident Investigation Commission is investigating whether the cause was a “mechanical failure or track anomaly.”
