Tren Maya cargo projections reduced to 4 million tons by 2030

The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) has reduced its cargo mobilization projections for the Tren Maya project. According to its 2026 Annual Work Program, the project is now expected to move up to 4 million tons of goods annually by 2030, a 15% decrease from the previous estimate of at least 4.7 million tons.

The cargo service is expected to begin operations between the last quarter of 2026 and during 2027. Planned infrastructure improvements include the rehabilitation of Line FA, connecting Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, with Palenque, Chiapas, and the construction of the Poxilá–Progreso railway bypass to link with the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT).
