Tren Maya faces financial and tourism challenges

The Tren Maya project faces significant financial and operational challenges. In 2024, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) allocated 1,012 million pesos to advertising and communication, a tenfold increase from 2015 levels. Of this, 491 million pesos were spent promoting the Tren Maya, while the project generated only 297 million pesos in revenue that year.

Data from President Claudia Sheinbaum’s second report indicates the project has struggled to attract international tourists. Between September 2025 and June 2026, international passengers represented only 8.5 percent of the total ridership.

Financially, the state-run enterprise managed by the Armed Forces reported losses of 867 million pesos during the second quarter of the current year. To address these deficits and complete the freight branch, the Federal Government has requested 18,180 million pesos in the 2027 economic package, with 17,190 million pesos specifically earmarked for freight infrastructure.
