Tren Maya faces financial losses and operational risks
The Tren Maya railway project faces significant operational, financial, and security challenges, according to its 2026 Annual Work Program and criticisms from federal deputy Daniel Chimal García. Financial reports indicate the project accumulated losses of 867 million pesos between April and June, excluding received subsidies.
Operational risks identified include a shortage of specialized railway personnel, technological deficiencies, and collapsed maintenance workshops. The project also faces threats from cyberattacks, vandalism, and a lack of electrical track electrification. These issues have contributed to documented derailments, electrical failures, and significant passenger delays.
Public perception remains a strategic challenge due to environmental concerns—including the destruction of 7,000 hectares of jungle and 130 cenotes—and the project's perceived lack of viability. Critics argue that instead of investing in souvenirs, the government should prioritize infrastructure safety, civil protection, and technical autonomy to ensure passenger and worker security.
