Tren Maya launches ‘Janal’ restaurant on August 23
The state‑run Tren Maya will open a new on‑board restaurant called Janal on Sunday, 23 August. The launch was announced by Director General Óscar David Lozano Águila during a presentation to business leaders from the five Mexican states served by the railway. Janal will operate on the Mérida‑Izamal segment, offering a menu designed by chef David Cetina that highlights traditional southeast Mexican dishes such as brazo de reina, panuchos, chayitas and dulce de papaya. An exclusive “Tren Maya” beer will also be served across all service classes (Xiinbal, Patal and Janal).
The initiative aims to turn the train itself into a culinary tourism destination, combining scenic travel with regional gastronomy. In the same briefing, the company said the Cancun‑Playa del Carmen route will resume service on 15 August, with additional feeder connections to hotels, the airport and key tourist zones.
