Tren Maya service and tourism expansion

Overview

The Tren Maya project is expanding its service offerings and connectivity in Mexico. On August 23, the state-run railway launched ‘Janal,’ a new on-board restaurant operating on the Mérida-Izamal segment. Announced by Director General Óscar David Lozano Águila, the restaurant features a menu by chef David Cetina highlighting traditional southeast Mexican dishes such as ‘brazo de reina, panuchos, chayitas and dulce de papaya.’ The service, named after the Mayan word for ‘food,’ is one of three passenger tiers alongside Xiinbal and Patal. The train’s design features panoramic windows inspired by architect Luis Barragán to showcase regional landscapes.

In addition to culinary developments, the railway is enhancing regional mobility. On August 15, the commercial route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen resumed service, providing four daily trips (two in each direction) to support commuters, students, and tourists. To support this, a new intermodal transport system called ‘Tren Maya Conecta’ has been introduced to link railway stations with strategic locations. In Cancún, the bus network connects the station to the Cancún International Airport, Plaza Las Américas, and the Hotel Zone. In Playa del Carmen, routes serve Plaza Playacar and various hotels along the Riviera Maya via federal highway 307. This initiative, involving the Mexican Government and the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), aims to synchronize land transport with train schedules to boost economic and tourism activity in the Mexican Caribbean.

Regarding legal developments, recent clarifications indicate that while there were headlines suggesting a suspension of the Maya Train, a federal court order actually directed environmental oversight toward the regulator, Profepa, rather than halting railway operations. The service continues to operate under these environmental supervision mandates.
