Tren Maya service expansion and revenue projections

Overview

The Tren Maya project is expanding its service offerings and connectivity in Mexico. On August 23, the state-run railway launched ‘Janal,’ a new on-board restaurant operating on the Mérida-Izamal segment. Announced by Director General Óscar David Lozano Águila, the restaurant features a menu by chef David Cetina highlighting traditional southeast Mexican dishes such as ‘brazo de reina, panuchos, chayitas and dulce de papaya.’ The service, named after the Mayan word for ‘food,’ is one of three passenger tiers alongside Xiinbal and Patal.

In addition to culinary developments, the railway is enhancing regional mobility. On August 15, the commercial route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen resumed service, providing four daily trips to support commuters, students, and tourists. To support this, a new intermodal transport system called ‘Tren Maya Conecta’ has been introduced to link railway stations with strategic locations, including the Cancún International Airport and the Riviera Maya.

On September 14, 2026, the railway launched a new Sunday service connecting Mérida and Chichén Itzá. This route includes a ‘Tren Restaurante’ service, allowing passengers to complete a round trip in a single day, departing Mérida at 08:30 and returning from Chichén Itzá at 16:00.

Despite these service expansions, budget projections for 2027 indicate financial challenges for several Mexican state-operated companies managed by the military. Tren Maya is specifically expected to see a 14.3% decrease in sales for 2027, with projected revenues of 1,090 million pesos. This is part of a broader projected 42% sales drop across six military-managed entities, including Mexicana de Aviación and AIFA.
