Tren Maya launches Janal restaurant train service in Yucatán

The Tren Maya has launched its new Janal restaurant train service, designed to integrate regional gastronomy and culture into the rail travel experience. The inaugural route ran between Mérida and Izamal in Yucatán, featuring a tasting menu prepared by Chef David Cetina Medina of the restaurant La Tradición.

Named after the Mayan word for “food,” the Janal service is one of three passenger tiers offered by the railway, alongside the regular Xiinbal service and the long-distance P’atal service. The train's architectural concept is inspired by the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán, featuring panoramic windows to allow passengers to view the southeastern Mexican landscapes while dining.

The inaugural trip included traditional Yucatecan dishes such as brazo de reina, panuchos, and chayitas. Following the rail journey, passengers utilized intermodal services to visit the historic center of Izamal, participating in cultural activities and traditional music to further link the onboard dining experience with local tourism attractions.
