Tren Maya railway expands service amid mechanical issues

The Tren Maya railway system, which forms a loop around the Yucatán Peninsula connecting cities like Cancún, Mérida, and Palenque, continues to expand its service and operational details. The network offers two passenger classes: the standard Xiinbal service and the Janal service, which includes onboard dining.

Travelers using the route between Mérida Teya and Chichén Itzá can complete a day trip with departures at 8:20 AM and returns at 4:00 PM. Fares for this specific route are set at 165 pesos for special rates and 220 pesos for general rates. However, passengers are advised to verify schedules and station locations, as some stations are located several kilometers from city centers.

Operational challenges have emerged, including a recent mechanical failure in the jungle of Campeche near the Belén ejido. The incident stranded dozens of passengers traveling toward Cancún. The National Guard's Railway Division coordinated a transfer to a second unit to complete the journey. While unofficial reports suggest a propulsion system issue, official causes have not yet been confirmed.
