Trenitalia to invest 7 billion euros in green regional rail fleet

Trenitalia is undergoing a significant modernization of its regional rail network to promote sustainable mobility. Maria Annunziata Giaconia, Trenitalia's Regional Operations Director, stated that regional rail serves as the backbone of an integrated and intermodal transport system.

The company is investing 7 billion euros into its fleet, with approximately 1 billion euros sourced from European Union and PNRR funds. Currently, 1,000 of the company's 1,300 regional trains are new. By 2027, Trenitalia aims to have 1,081 new trains in operation, representing 80% of its total regional fleet.

These new models are designed for efficiency, consuming 30% less energy than previous versions. The fleet includes hybrid trains and a prototype powered by biofuel derived from food waste. Additionally, the company is focusing on accessibility and digital ticketing to encourage a shift from private cars to public transport.
