Trenton house fire kills two children and displaces families

A three-alarm house fire in Trenton, New Jersey, resulted in the deaths of a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy on Wednesday morning. The blaze, which began just before 4 a.m. on the 300 block of Hewitt Street, reportedly started on the first floor in the living room and spread rapidly through the three-story residence.

An adult male inside the home managed to escape the fire unharmed. The fire completely destroyed the primary residence and damaged adjoining buildings, displacing four families. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to those affected.

Two firefighters were injured during the response; one was treated at the scene for respiratory issues, while another was hospitalized with non-life-threatening burns to his leg. Fire marshals are currently investigating the cause of the fire and whether working smoke detectors were present in the home.
