Treviglio police thwart 48,300 euro police impersonation scam

Police in Treviglio successfully thwarted a sophisticated impersonation scam targeting a well-known local volunteer. The perpetrator posed as a State Police inspector, fabricating a fake investigation to convince the victim to transfer 48,300 euros via instant bank transfer.

To increase the credibility of the deception, the scammer used “spoofing” techniques to make calls and messages appear as though they were coming from banking institutions and the Treviso Police Headquarters. The fraudster even provided specific instructions on what to tell bank officials, claiming the funds were for the purchase of an “Alfa Romeo Stelvio” for a relative.

The scheme was interrupted when the victim visited a post office to check their account and was advised to contact the police. Officers were able to activate anti-fraud procedures, blocking the funds before they could be moved further. The judicial authority has since ordered the seizure of the full amount for eventual restitution to the owner.
