Trey Kaufman-Renn sues NCAA for sixth year of eligibility

Former Purdue basketball player Trey Kaufman-Renn has filed a legal motion in Clark County, Indiana, seeking a sixth year of collegiate eligibility. The 6-foot-9 forward, who was selected 59th overall in the NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, is challenging the NCAA’s eligibility framework.

Kaufman-Renn’s legal argument centers on a shift in NCAA rules. He contends that under previous regulations, he could have sought a medical hardship waiver due to a knee injury sustained during his redshirt season. His attorney, Mickey Weber, stated that Kaufman-Renn is not seeking special treatment but rather “fair access under rules that shifted beneath him.”

The lawsuit also seeks to ensure that his NBA draft status does not prevent him from competing in college. Kaufman-Renn has requested that the court prevent the NCAA from barring universities from enrolling, transferring, or competing with him, which his counsel argues would constitute a restriction of competition under Indiana law.
