Trey Kaufman-Renn NCAA eligibility litigation

Former Purdue basketball player Trey Kaufman-Renn filed a legal motion in Clark County, Indiana, to secure a sixth year of collegiate eligibility. His legal team argued that shifting NCAA regulations prevented him from obtaining a medical hardship waiver for a previous knee injury, stating he was seeking “fair access under rules that shifted beneath him.” The lawsuit also sought to prevent the NCAA from barring universities from enrolling or competing with him following his selection as the 59th overall pick in the NBA Draft.

A Clark County Circuit Court judge subsequently ruled in favor of Kaufman-Renn, granting him the legal right to pursue a sixth season. The ruling mandates that member schools must be permitted to recruit, enroll, and play him immediately. This decision challenges the NCAA’s traditional five-year enforcement model.

Following the litigation, a judge issued a temporary restraining order specifically allowing Kaufman-Renn to pursue his sixth year of eligibility. The order prevents the NCAA from denying his status based on his professional standing or standard student-athlete limits. Kaufman-Renn, who was selected 59th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, has confirmed his departure from Purdue. He is expected to enter the transfer portal for the 2026-27 season, with several programs reportedly expressing interest.
