Romania transporters protest new TollRo road tax system

Transport companies in Romania are launching a wave of protests across the country, including in Târgu Jiu and Iași, to oppose the new TollRo road taxation system introduced on October 1. Protesters argue that the per-kilometer charge, combined with rising fuel prices and increased insurance costs, is placing unsustainable financial pressure on the logistics sector.

In Târgu Jiu, dozens of trucks conducted a slow-moving march through city streets to draw attention to these rising costs. Similarly, in Iași, approximately 100 transporters demonstrated, claiming that the new system has significantly increased daily operational expenses compared to the previous vignette system. Some drivers reported that previously paid vignettes were invalidated by the transition.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the potential economic ripple effects, as transporters warn that these increased costs may eventually be passed on to consumers through higher prices for goods and services. Additionally, there are discussions regarding the impact on road safety; some operators suggest that the higher cost of using motorways under the TollRo system may drive heavy vehicles back onto national roads like the DN2-E85 to save money.
