Trieste's Pedocin Beach Remains Europe's Last Gender‑Separated Shore

The Pedocin Beach, officially called "Alla Lanterna," is located in the harbor of Trieste, Italy. Established in 1903, the beach separates male and female swimmers with a concrete wall that extends about 74 metres into the sea, making it the only remaining gender‑segregated beach in Europe.

British Telegraph writer Sarah Lane visited the site from Emilia‑Romagna and reported that the tradition is still actively defended by locals. Lifeguard Samuele, who has worked there for four years, described a relaxed atmosphere, especially on the women's side, while longtime bar‑owner Ivan highlighted the friendly vibe. A dispute in June, sparked by a tourist objecting to the separating wall, briefly brought the beach into the headlines, but the community continues to cherish the historic arrangement.
