Triglav Glacier expected to disappear by October

Researchers from the Anton Melik Geographical Institute (GIAM) have warned that the Triglav Glacier is expected to disappear completely by October. Geographer Miha Pavšek noted that recent footage shows the final remnants of ice vanishing.

The glacier's decline is attributed to a combination of low snowfall, early snowmelt, and exceptionally high summer temperatures. Historically, the glacier served as a significant training ground for elite skiers and Olympic medalists.

Data shows a long-term reduction in the glacier's size. In the late 19th century, it covered approximately 40 hectares. By 1946, measurements recorded it at 14.4 hectares. Following a period of stagnation between 1965 and 1982, the glacier experienced its fastest rate of recession between 1983 and 2003.
