Triglav Glacier disappearance in Slovenia

Overview

Researchers from the Anton Melik Geographical Institute have documented the total disappearance of the Triglav Glacier in Slovenia. In early September, experts warned that the glacier was expected to vanish by October due to low snowfall, early snowmelt, and high summer temperatures.

By mid-September, the glacier was confirmed to have completely disappeared. Historical data shows a significant long-term reduction in size, from approximately 40 hectares in the late 19th century to just 0.7 hectares nine years prior to its disappearance. The melting has caused practical issues for local infrastructure, including water shortages at the Triglavski dom at Kredarica in 2022.
