Greece and Turkey ministers hold unscheduled New York meeting

During the United Nations General Assembly in New York, several key diplomatic developments occurred involving Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus. Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis held an unscheduled, brief meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. While the meeting was not political in nature, both sides agreed to maintain communication and work toward a formal meeting in the future.

Simultaneously, discussions regarding the Cyprus issue showed a lack of progress. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erturrahman met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stating his readiness to accept six of the seven confidence-building measures proposed by the UN. However, he maintained opposition to the opening of new crossing points and emphasized that substantive preparation in Nicosia is required before further high-level meetings, such as 2+1 or 5+1 formats, can occur.

In addition to these bilateral and multilateral efforts, Gerapetritis engaged in trilateral meetings with ministers from Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt to discuss regional stability and the Eastern Mediterranean. Greek officials also noted the importance of the ongoing Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project amidst these shifting regional dynamics.
