Trip.com data shows 81% surge in global car rental bookings
Global car rental bookings have increased by 81% over the past year, signaling a significant shift toward self-drive travel as tourists seek more personalized and flexible itineraries, according to data from Trip.com.
Japan has emerged as the leading destination for self-drive journeys, with bookings rising 119% year-on-year. Within Japan, cities such as Tokyo, Jeju, Sapporo, Fukuoka, and Okinawa have seen substantial growth. Other high-growth regions include South Korea (148%), Australia (74%), Thailand (59%), and the United States (54%).
The trend is also expanding in Europe, where Italy, Spain, and Germany reported booking increases of 88%, 80%, and 75% respectively. This surge in interest is reflected in social media engagement, with drive-related content from Spain increasing by 662% year-on-year.
