Tripura expands hospitals while banning private practice for government doctors

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced a series of health‑sector initiatives. The state will open the new Agartala Civil Hospital in July and has laid the foundation stone for a 100‑bed Sepahijala District Hospital, while upgrading facilities at Jirania, Mohanpur, Jampuijala and Gomati district hospitals. More than 200 doctors have been recruited, and two‑shift services are planned to improve patient access.

In a separate policy move, the state cabinet approved a ban on private practice for faculty and medical officers of Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, coupled with a 20 % non‑practising allowance increase. The opposition Congress warned the decision could prompt senior doctors to retire, potentially affecting patient care and medical education. Both measures are presented as steps to improve health services and accountability in Tripura.
