Tripura development push expands to panchayats and education
Overview
Manik Saha’s government continues to roll out development programmes across health, infrastructure, education, and local governance. By mid‑July, about 80% of residents held an Ayushman Bharat Health Account; health‑facility and professional registries were completed and 1.8 million digital health tokens were issued via Scan‑and‑Share at 31 hospitals. At the Tripura Business Conclave 2026, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced a target GSDP of roughly ₹90,000 crore and investment proposals totalling about ₹1.21 lakh crore. In July, Saha inaugurated the Shib Bari Water Reservoir project and secured a 40‑year power‑purchase agreement with NHPC for electricity from the upcoming 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project. On 12 July, he opened the 50‑bed Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Agartala Civil Hospital, a fully paperless facility; referrals to other states fell 83%. Saha has actively sought central support for an AIIMS in Tripura, expanded railway connectivity with the first MEMU train service between Agartala and Assam in July, and promoted the dairy and agricultural sectors, including a tripartite MoU to modernise dairy cooperatives and a ₹234‑crore project to expand Queen pineapple cultivation. He also announced the establishment of a Tripura Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Udaipur. To improve healthcare accountability, the state cabinet approved a ban on private practice for doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, offering a 20% non‑practising allowance. Recent efforts also include launching the Agartala Smart City Mission, distributing bicycles to students to reduce drop-out rates, and implementing waste management penalties. In August, Saha inaugurated the Supra Multispeciality Hospital in Agartala, while a central health delegation inspected the Agartala Civil Hospital's digital infrastructure. In mid-August, Saha inaugurated 18 development projects in the Unakoti district valued at approximately ₹45.68 crore, covering education, healthcare, and rural development.
