Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha launches first MEMU train linking Agartala and Assam

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the state's first MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train service on July 4, connecting Agartala in Tripura with Karimganj (also referred to as Sribhumi) in Assam. The daily service, equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking, can seat up to 3,600 passengers and is expected to aid thousands of commuters, including office‑goers, traders and businesspeople.

The launch marks the Northeast’s inaugural MEMU line, enhancing regional rail connectivity. Saha highlighted ongoing projects such as the extension of the railway network to Sabroom, which will serve as a gateway to Bangladesh once the Maitri Setu bridge becomes operational, and a proposed 263‑km double‑track line between Chandranathpur (Assam) and Sabroom. These initiatives aim to increase the number of trains serving Agartala and further integrate the state with neighboring regions.

Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury noted that Tripura currently operates 18 trains, including 13 express services and five DEMU services, and affirmed the government's commitment to expanding public infrastructure for broader societal benefit.
