Tripura CM hints at BJP-TMP electoral alliance for upcoming polls

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP), may reach an electoral understanding ahead of the upcoming village committee elections scheduled for September. While the TMP recently secured a landslide victory in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections as a solo entity, Saha noted that while disagreements exist, the parties remain partners.

TMP founder Pradyot Bikram Kishore has expressed concerns regarding a potential split within his party due to differing stances on the BJP alliance. Kishore maintains that no alliance will be formed unless the government fulfills a three-year-old agreement regarding the rights of indigenous people. He warned that some MLAs and MDCs might leave the party if he maintains a firm stance on these issues, but stated he is prepared to face those consequences to protect the land and constitutional rights of the Tiprasa people.

Kishore emphasized the need for a constitutional guarantee for indigenous land rights, similar to provisions in Bodoland, Karbi Anglong, and Mizoram. Meanwhile, Saha expressed optimism that a unanimous decision regarding the tripartite agreement for indigenous development will eventually be reached.
