Tripura to hold Village Committee elections after 10-year gap

Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled for Monday, September 28, marking the first such polls in the region in 10 years. The elections cover 4,597 seats across 587 Village Committees in tribal areas, which represent approximately two-thirds of Tripura's land area.

Significant portions of the seats have already been decided unopposed. The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) secured 1,557 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 81 seats without contest. The remaining seats will be contested by a multi-cornered field including the BJP-TMP-IPFT alliance against the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Congress.

To ensure peaceful conduct, authorities have deployed over 15,000 security personnel, including 74 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the Tripura State Rifles, and the Tripura Police. The Tripura State Election Commission has prepared 1,095 polling stations across 44 blocks to accommodate approximately 6.65 lakh eligible voters.
