Tripura DGP Anurag's death prompts demand for High Court‑monitored judicial probe

Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, a 1994‑batch IPS officer, was found dead on 20 July in the washroom attached to his office at the Tripura police headquarters in Agartala. The post‑mortem could not determine a cause of death, and the circumstances have been described as "mysterious." On 24 July the state police formed a three‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, tasked with weekly progress reports.

Congress Working Committee member and former Tripura minister Sudip Roy Barman, accompanied by party leaders, reiterated the party's call for a judicial inquiry monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, alleging a possible murder and accusing the state government of reluctance to order an independent probe. He urged the High Court to take suo motu cognisance. Opposition parties, including the CPI(M) and CPI, have also demanded a High Court‑monitored investigation and organised protests, emphasizing that the incident is of national concern.
