Tripura DGP death probe expands, protests planned
Entities: Jitendra Choudhury · Tripura State Government · Namit Pathak · Anurag Dhankar · Subhojit Deb
Overview
On 20 July 2026 Tripura’s Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar was found dead in a washroom at the state police headquarters in Agartala. The state observed a day of mourning, lowered the national flag to half‑mast and named ADGP G.S. Rao as acting DGP.
A three‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak was formed on 24 July to collect evidence and file weekly progress reports. On 27 July the SIT was expanded to a ten‑member team, adding Additional Superintendent of Police Dhruba Nath and officers from the Cyber Crime Police Station, Amtali Police Station, West Agartala Women Police Station, the Battala and Ramnagar outposts, an inspector from the KTD Singh Police Training Academy and former investigating officer Subhojit Deb. The order requires daily morning briefings, evening debriefings and daily progress reports to the West Tripura SP, with a weekly report to the police inspector‑general.
Opposition leaders, including Congress Working Committee member Sudip Roy Barman and parties such as the CPI(M) and CPI, have called for a High Court‑monitored judicial inquiry, alleging possible murder and accusing the state government of hesitating to order an independent probe. The CPI(M) announced a statewide “jail bharo” agitation for 10 August and a mass rally in September, saying the actions aim to safeguard democratic rights and mobilise public support while accusing the BJP‑led state government of restricting democratic activities.
