Tripura expands DGP death probe team to ten investigators
Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, a 1994‑batch IPS officer, was found dead on 20 July 2024 in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the state police headquarters in Agartala. The acting DGP set up a three‑member investigation team on 24 July, led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak. On 27 July the team was reconstituted with ten members, adding Additional Superintendent of Police Dhruba Nath, the officers‑in‑charge of the Cyber Crime Police Station, Amtali Police Station, West Agartala Women Police Station, the Battala and Ramnagar outposts, an inspector from KTD Singh Police Training Academy and former investigating officer Subhojit Deb. An official order requires daily morning briefings, evening debriefings and daily progress reports to the West Tripura SP, with a weekly report submitted to the police inspector‑general.
The opposition CPI(M) in Tripura responded by announcing a statewide “jail bharo” agitation on 10 August and a mass rally in September, demanding a judicial inquiry into the DGP’s death and expressing no confidence in the three‑member Special Investigation Team appointed by the state government. Party state secretary Jitendra Choudhury said the party will mobilise public support to safeguard democratic rights and press for a formal inquiry.
