The Tripura cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha, approved a ban on private practice for doctors and faculty attached to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP). The decision, announced by spokesperson and minister Sushant Chaudhary, includes a 20 % increase in basic salary as a non‑practice allowance and will be formalised through a forthcoming notification.

Opposition Congress leaders, including former health minister Sudhip Roy Barman, warned that the ban could harm health services and medical education, potentially prompting experienced doctors to retire to continue private work. Around 350 faculty members and medical officers are presently employed at the two institutions, and the government says the policy will first apply only to AGMC and GBP before possible extension after review.
