Tripura Village Committee elections see high turnout amid reports of violence
Village Committee elections held under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) saw a high voter turnout, with officials reporting between 79% and 80% of eligible voters participating. The elections, the first in tribal areas after a 10-year hiatus, covered 587 Village Committees and 2,950 seats, though 1,644 seats were filled uncontested.
While the State Election Commission described the process as largely peaceful and orderly, incidents of violence were reported in the Gomati district. In one instance, a Tipra Motha Party candidate and an associate were injured following gunfire near a polling station. Additionally, a clash between political activists and police resulted in injuries to the Gomati district Superintendent of Police and other personnel.
The State Election Commission received three complaints from political parties regarding the removal or prevention of polling agents. Despite the scheduled 4 PM closing time, voting continued at several stations due to large queues of citizens waiting to cast their ballots.
