Tripura aims to make AGMC a leading medical hub in Northeast India

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the state government is working to transform Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital into one of the premier medical education, research and super‑specialty centres in Northeast India. He highlighted the expansion of MBBS seats across government medical colleges, the recent establishment of a government dental college, and the growth of postgraduate programmes and specialised courses. Saha also said the state is rapidly progressing toward setting up an independent health university, which would further strengthen medical education and skilled‑human‑resource development. He noted that earlier patients often had to travel outside the state for complex procedures, but now many such surgeries are successfully performed at AGMC and GBP Hospital, reducing out‑of‑state referrals.

The initiatives are part of a broader effort to modernise healthcare delivery in Tripura through technology‑driven education, research promotion and the development of skilled healthcare professionals.
