Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri acquires Soma B Thermal Power Plant

Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri (TKİ) has acquired the Soma B Thermal Power Plant in Manisa through an enforcement sale process. The acquisition follows the bankruptcy filing of the plant by Konya Şeker, which had operated the facility since purchasing it for $685.5 million in 2015.

After no other bidders participated in the auction process, TKİ secured the 990-megawatt plant and its real estate for 6.946 billion TL (excluding VAT). This sale price is approximately half of the 13.8 billion TL valuation determined by court-appointed experts. The sale proceeds will be used to offset Konya Şeker’s existing debts to TKİ, which exceeded 20 billion TL.

The transfer marks the return of a major coal-fired power plant to public ownership roughly 12 years after its initial privatization. While the plant's future operational model is still being discussed, the possibility of transferring its management to Elektrik Üretim AŞ (EÜAŞ) is under consideration.
