Soma B Thermal Power Plant bankruptcy and acquisition
Overview
Soma B Termik Santrali, operated by Konya Şeker, filed for bankruptcy due to an unsustainable debt burden exceeding 20 billion TL owed to Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri (TKİ) for lignite coal supplies, alongside other significant liabilities. The facility, which has a 990-megawatt capacity, faced financial pressure from rising maintenance costs, environmental investments, and foreign currency-denominated credits.
Following the bankruptcy proceedings and an auction process that saw no other bidders, Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri (TKİ) acquired the plant and its real estate for 6.946 billion TL (excluding VAT). This acquisition price was approximately half of the 13.8 billion TL valuation set by experts. The sale serves to offset Konya Şeker’s debts to TKİ, marking the return of the plant to public ownership roughly 12 years after its 2015 privatization.
