LPG energy security and market trends discussed at Liquid Gas Week
At the Liquid Gas Week program held by the World Liquid Gas Association (WLGA) in Istanbul, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted the critical role of LPG in global energy security. He noted that LPG serves as a vital, flexible, and accessible alternative during supply disruptions, particularly for the approximately two billion people worldwide who lack access to clean cooking methods.
Minister Bayraktar reported that Turkey possesses one of the world’s most advanced LPG markets, ranking second in total LPG consumption in Europe. Additionally, Turkey is the world’s second-largest consumer of autogas and ranks first in the number of LPG-powered vehicles and autogas stations, with approximately 5.2 million LPG vehicles making up about 30% of the registered fleet.
International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol addressed the impact of geopolitical tensions on energy markets. He noted that LPG prices have risen by an average of 60% compared to pre-conflict levels due to pressures from the US/Israel-Iran conflict. Birol highlighted that over one-third of LPG trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making Middle Eastern developments critical to global supply. He mentioned that the IEA is discussing the establishment of a new LPG security mechanism with governments and industry representatives to mitigate potential supply disruptions.
