US extends arms embargo suspension for Greek Cypriot Administration

The United States has extended the suspension of the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration (GKRY) for another year, until September 30, 2027. This decision allows for the sale of defense materials and services to the administration for the 2027 fiscal year.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Turkey have expressed deep concern and sadness regarding the move. Ziya Öztürkler, President of the TRNC Assembly, stated that the decision ignores the realities of the island and its two separate peoples and states. He warned that increasing the military capacity of one side risks undermining trust and could trigger an arms race, potentially destabilizing the security of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that they will continue to work closely with Turkey to protect the security and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people in response to these developments.
