Bão số 1 (Maysak) slows over Quảng Ninh, delivering record winds and heavy rain to northern Vietnam

Bão số 1, also known as Maysak, made landfall near Móng Cái, Quảng Ninh on the night of 4 July 2026 and then moved unusually slowly across the northern coast. Wind speeds remained at tropical‑storm strength (Beaufort 8‑9) while gusts peaked at Beaufort 12 in Móng Cái. The storm produced intense rainfall, with most of the northeastern provinces recording 40‑90 mm of rain and isolated totals exceeding 300 mm, especially in the Bắc Vịnh Bắc Bộ and the mountainous districts of Lai Châu, Điện Biên and Lào Cai.

The slow movement extended hazardous conditions for several hours, generating high sea states of 2‑4 m, coastal flooding, landslides and river flash floods. Authorities warned that the heavy rain could overwhelm urban drainage, industrial zones and low‑lying farmland, and urged residents to stay alert for gusts, storm‑surge and lightning. By 5 July the cyclone began weakening as it crossed into the southern part of China's Quảng Tây province, transitioning to a tropical depression and later to a low‑pressure area, but the risk of secondary rain‑related hazards remained elevated.

Meteorological services continue to monitor the system and advise precautionary measures for the affected coastal and inland communities.
