Hurricane Rachel intensifies to Category 1 in the Pacific
Hurricane Rachel has intensified into a Category 1 storm in the Pacific Ocean, posing significant weather risks to the western and southern coasts of Mexico. As of Wednesday morning, the hurricane's center was located approximately 350 km southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 570 km west of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. The system is producing maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h with gusts reaching 170 km/h.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warns of intense rainfall, ranging from 75 to 150 mm, across Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero. Very heavy rainfall is also expected in Nayarit. These conditions may lead to landslides, rising river levels, and flooding in low-lying areas. Additionally, the hurricane is generating dangerous swells of four to six meters along the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán, with wind gusts up to 90 km/h.
In response to the approaching storm, classes have been suspended in certain regions of Jalisco. Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that moisture from Rachel, combined with the remnants of Hurricane Polo, could fuel a weeklong flood threat across the Central United States.
