Tropical depressions and Hurricane Rachel in the Pacific

Overview

In late September 2026, multiple tropical depressions formed in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico. Tropical Depression Eighteen-E initially developed parallel to the southern coast of Mexico near Oaxaca and Guerrero, bringing risks of flooding and landslides. By September 29, Tropical Depression 19-E formed west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, moving through open waters without expected impact on the Mexican coastline.

On the same day, the system intensified into Hurricane Rachel. As of Wednesday morning, Rachel is a Category 1 hurricane located approximately 350 kilometers southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, and 570 kilometers west of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. The storm maintains maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h, with gusts reaching 170 km/h.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warns of intense rainfall between 75 and 150 mm in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero, with very strong rains expected in Nayarit. These conditions may lead to landslides, rising river levels, and flooding in low-lying areas. Coastal hazards include high waves of four to six meters and strong winds. Authorities have established prevention and surveillance zones from Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, to Playa Pérula, Jalisco, and from Playa Pérula to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco. As a precaution, classes have been suspended in certain regions of Jalisco.

Additionally, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that moisture from Rachel, potentially combined with the remnants of Hurricane Polo, could fuel a weeklong flood threat across more than 30 states in the Central United States.
