Tropical Depression Pilandok to intensify and enhance monsoon

Tropical Depression Pilandok is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm by Tuesday, September 1, as it meanders over the Philippine Sea east of extreme Northern Luzon. While the system is expected to remain far from the Philippine landmass and is unlikely to make landfall, its circulation is enhancing the southwest monsoon, known locally as ‘habagat’.

This enhanced monsoon is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions to large parts of the country, including Luzon and the Visayas. PAGASA has warned of potential flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

In addition to Pilandok, the state weather bureau is monitoring two other tropical depressions outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that are also contributing to the active monsoon. Pilandok is expected to exit the PAR by Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.
