Tropical Storm Arthur threatens Texas Gulf Coast with heavy rain
Meteorologists are monitoring a developing rain system off the Texas coast that could be designated Tropical Storm Arthur. The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana. Forecasts call for 4‑8 inches of rain across broad areas, with locally up to 20 inches and rainfall rates of 2‑3 inches per hour. The storm is expected to bring wind gusts of 40‑60 mph, small storm surges of 1‑3 feet, and isolated tornadoes or waterspouts.
The primary hazard is flooding, with urban drainage systems likely to be overwhelmed, leading to road closures and hazardous travel conditions. Rivers such as the Neches, Guadalupe, Brazos and Trinity are under close watch for rapid rises. The Houston metropolitan area faces particular concern, as intense rainfall could disrupt transportation and commerce while emergency responders prepare for potential rescues.
