Tropical Storm Edouard causes severe flooding and power outages in Texas and Louisiana
Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border on Tuesday, specifically near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana. While the system weakened to a tropical depression on Tuesday night, it caused significant destruction across Southeast and East Texas through extreme rainfall and high winds.
Heavy rainfall totals reached between 10 and 21 inches in several areas, including Hardin and Tyler counties, where flash flood emergencies were declared. In Hardin County, emergency officials reported the rescue of approximately a dozen motorists stranded in floodwaters, as well as two people from a flooded home. Localized rainfall in some areas reportedly exceeded 20 inches.
The storm resulted in widespread power outages, affecting over 70,000 utility customers across Texas. Damage included downed trees, non-functional traffic signals, and flooded underpasses, particularly in the Beaumont area. In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott activated the state’s Emergency Operations Center, and more than 1,500 response personnel were mobilized to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
