Tropical Storm Fausto Brings Hazardous Surf to Hawaii as It Moves North
Tropical Storm Fausto weakened to a post‑tropical remnant low with maximum sustained winds of about 60‑65 mph and a minimum central pressure near 1,000 mb. On July 28‑29 it was located roughly 265‑400 miles northeast/east of Hilo and Honolulu, moving west‑northwest at 14‑15 mph. A high‑surf warning and later a high‑surf advisory were issued for east‑facing shores of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, with surf heights of 8‑12 feet, powerful rip currents and hazardous conditions for swimmers and boaters. Beach closures were ordered in the Keaukaha area of Hilo, affecting several local parks. Forecasts call for Fausto to stay north of the Hawaiian Islands, continue weakening to a tropical depression by Thursday and eventually dissipate.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Genevieve, once a Category 5 system, weakened to Category 3 with sustained winds of about 125 mph. It was situated some 530 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, generating large swells that reached Baja California and southwestern Mexico, also creating dangerous surf and rip currents there. Both cyclones are expected to move further away from land, allowing surf conditions around Hawaii and Mexico to improve as the storms weaken.
