Mexico endures 45°C heat and heavy rains as Tropical Wave 18 nears

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) warned that much of Mexico will face extreme heat and intense rainfall in early July 2026. Temperatures of 40‑45 °C are forecast for north‑western states such as Baja California, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, Nayarit and parts of the Gulf coast. Simultaneously, tropical wave 18 – together with wave 17 in the Yucatán – is expected to bring downpours of 75‑150 mm in five states and scattered showers elsewhere. The rain is likely to be accompanied by strong winds (up to 70 km/h), hail, lightning and rapid river rises, raising the risk of flooding, landslides and urban water‑logging across Sinaloa, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo and the capital, Mexico City. A low‑pressure area off the Pacific coast of Oaxaca carries an 80 % chance of developing into a cyclone (potentially named Dalila) within a week, further amplifying the threat. Authorities urged residents to follow civil‑protection alerts, avoid flooded areas, secure loose objects and stay hydrated.
