Mexico's Onda Tropical 22 Triggers Widespread Heavy Rain and Extreme Heat
The Mexican Servicio Meteorológico Nacional reports that Tropical Wave 22 is moving over the Gulf of Tehuantepec, interacting with the Mexican monsoon and a low‑pressure system. The combination is expected to produce heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and possible hail across a large swath of Mexico, from the northwest (Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa) to the southeast (Chiapas, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Yucatán). Rainfall could reach 75‑150 mm in the hardest‑hit states, raising the risk of flash flooding, river swell, landslides and urban inundation.
Temperatures above 45 °C are forecast for northern regions, especially the northeastern part of Baja California and the northwest of Sonora, with heat‑related illnesses also warned. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h may cause falling branches and damage to structures. National authorities, including Protección Civil and the Comisión Nacional del Agua, have urged the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and follow official alerts.
The outlook applies to more than 19 states, with specific warnings for Chiapas, Tabasco, Sonora, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, Veracruz and the Yucatán Peninsula. The situation will evolve through the end of July and into early August, and the agencies will continue to monitor and update forecasts.
