Extreme weather impacts Brazil, Peru, and Mexico

Multiple regions across Latin America and Europe are experiencing extreme weather events. In Brazil, the state of Rio Grande do Sul is under severe threat from an extratropical cyclone expected to form between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. This system may bring wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and intense storms to Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. The National Secretariat of Protection and Civil Defense has recognized a state of emergency in eight municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul to facilitate disaster response. Additionally, Law 15.488/2026 has allocated R$ 305 million for climate disaster relief via the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development.

In Peru, heavy rains have caused flooding in Lima, affecting dozens of homes and disrupting sewage and water systems. Authorities in Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna are on red alert for extreme rainfall and potential landslides. Meanwhile, in Mexico, high temperatures are expected in northern states like Sonora and Baja California, with peaks potentially exceeding 45°C, while tropical waves continue to bring heavy rain to regions like Sinaloa and Veracruz. In Spain, a DANA (isolated depression at high levels) is causing instability, bringing storms and heat to various autonomous communities.
