Tropical waves trigger flooding in Costa Rica and heavy rain in Venezuela
Tropical waves are causing significant weather disruptions across Central and South America. In Costa Rica, Tropical Wave #47 has triggered intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and widespread flooding. More than 400 homes have been inundated, particularly in regions such as Fraijanes, Sarapiquí, Pococí, Guatuso, and Liberia. The National Emergency Prevention and Attention Commission (CNE) has activated temporary shelters in Guatuso and Liberia to accommodate displaced residents. Authorities have warned of high soil saturation levels, with some areas in the Central Valley reaching 100% saturation, increasing the risk of landslides and further flooding.
In Venezuela, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inameh) reports that Tropical Wave #52, combined with the Intertropical Convergence Zone and a monsoon trough, is bringing variable intensity rainfall to much of the country. Affected regions include Amazonas, Bolívar, Anzoátegui, Apure, Barinas, and Zulia, as well as the Andean region. In the Greater Caracas area, meteorologists expect increased cloud cover and potential thunderstorms following midday, which may impact local transport and infrastructure.
