Venezuela tropical wave rainstorms continue

Overview

The Atlantic tropical‑wave season kept Venezuelan regions under repeated rain threats through August 2026. Early August activity included Waves 34 and 35, which brought thunderstorms, lightning, and Saharan dust. By 12 August, INAMEH warned that Tropical Wave 37 was increasing atmospheric instability across several states, including Zulia and the Andes. On 18 August, Tropical Wave 38 brought rainfall and wind gusts to Delta Amacuro, Monagas, Sucre, and Anzoátegui, with additional precipitation expected in Zulia, Trujillo, Mérida, and Táchira. Heavy rains from Wave 38 caused significant infrastructure damage in Monagas on 19 August, where the collapse of three 115 kV transmission towers disrupted electricity in municipalities such as Bolívar and Punceres. Corpoelec deployed over 650 personnel for repairs, while Governor Ernesto Luna implemented a contingency plan for 68 communities, providing potable water and 7,000 food bags to affected families. By 23 August, Tropical Wave 40 triggered severe events, including a ‘shelf cloud’ and waterspout over Lake Maracaibo, and flash floods in central and western regions that affected over 150 homes. On 25 and 26 August, Tropical Wave 41 caused further damage. In Monagas, authorities reported 28 fallen trees and damage to 14 homes and the Estadio Monumental de Maturín. In Anzoátegui, El Tigre reported fallen utility poles and structural damage. In Caracas, Mayor Carmen Meléndez reported five deaths and 173 weather-related incidents over a two-week period, including 45 flooded roads and 29 landslides, noting that clogged drainage systems contributed to the severity. In Lara, intense winds and electrical failures affected Carora. By 31 August, INAMEH reported that Tropical Wave 43 was causing rain and electrical activity across Amazonas, Bolívar, the central and western plains, Lara, the Andes, and Zulia. In September, Tropical Wave 48 moved across the country, bringing heavy rainfall and electrical discharges.
