TrueNAS expands storage management capabilities and Proxmox VE integration

TrueNAS SCALE is a Linux-based storage platform designed to transform server hardware into managed network-attached storage (NAS) systems. Maintained by iXsystems, the platform utilizes OpenZFS to provide features such as checksums, copy-on-write snapshots, and replication. It is intended for use by home labs, small offices, and infrastructure teams to manage data pools, file services, and virtual machines through a single administration interface.

To improve integration with virtualization environments, an official TrueNAS plugin for Proxmox VE has entered beta testing. This plugin acts as a native storage backend for Proxmox VE, allowing users to provision, snapshot, resize, migrate, and delete virtual machine disks directly from the hypervisor. By communicating with the TrueNAS API, the plugin enables Proxmox to manage disks as independent ZFS volumes via iSCSI or NVMe/TCP, rather than relying on large files over NFS, which can lead to slower snapshot performance.
